Historical Context

U.S. Army AEF

President Woodrow Wilson formed the U.S. Army American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in 1917 under the command of MG John “Black Jack” Pershing. By 1918, it numbered over 4,000,000 soldiers in 43 Divisions. AEF soldiers fought with distinction on the Western Front in the battles of Chateau-Thierry, Belleau Wood, Saint-Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the largest land battle ever fought by United States forces.  By the time of the 1918 Armistice, 116,708 American soldiers had died and another 204,000 had been wounded. Tragically another 757 American civilians died due to military action.
